A Historic Political Shift in West Bengal
Yesterday, Friday, they made it official – Suvendu Adhikari is going to be the next Chief Minister of West Bengal. After all those months of hypothetical conversation, loud rallies, tears in villages, and heated arguments in every para, the BJP has won big and chosen him as their leader. The swearing-in should be in a day or two, probably right there at Brigade Parade Ground. Fifteen long years of Didi’s rule… it’s actually over. Feels strange even saying it.
“Suvendu seems like someone who knows our soil.” Then I met a group of TMC women in a bustee who were almost in tears. “This can’t be fair,” one said. Emotions are raw on both sides. That’s Bengal for you – we don’t do anything halfway.

Suvendu Adhikari’s Journey from Contai to Chief Minister
Suvendu’s story is the kind we Bengalis love to repeat.
Born in 1970 in a political family in Contai. He started in Congress, then became a strongman in Trinamool. He was Mamata’s minister for Transport, Irrigation – big portfolios. Everyone remembers Nandigram though. The protests, the split, that dramatic jump to BJP in 2020-21. He defeated Mamata Banerjee herself from Nandigram in 2021. This time she shifted to Bhabanipur and he chased her there and won again, even bigger. That’s why the “giantkiller” name stuck. He just doesn’t scare easily.
He isn’t some babu from Delhi. This fellow has walked the mud roads, eaten with fishermen, argued with local clubs. His supporters say he’s straightforward, works hard, and doesn’t give long lectures. Critics call him too aggressive, bring up old cases and fights. But even they admit – the man has ground-level pull. That’s what helped BJP crack open areas that were locked for years.

BJP Chooses Suvendu Adhikari as Leader
At the BJP meeting in Kolkata, it was quick and loud. Dilip Ghosh proposed his name, everyone clapped and cheered. Amit Shah came himself to be there. Narendra Modi congratulated and talked about building a new Bengal. When Suvendu spoke, he kept his voice calm. He said this victory belongs to the people who wanted change. He talked about jobs for our boys and girls, stopping the violence, fixing roads and hospitals, and trying to bring everyone together. No big victory dance. Just simple words. Whether he can actually do it… only time will tell.
How Mamata Banerjee’s Era Came to an End
How did things reach this point? Mamata came to power in 2011 on the Singur-Nandigram wave. She built a powerful local network, gave welfare schemes, and kept her people loyal. But slowly the problems piled up – complaints of money siphoned off in every project, violence that never fully stopped, young people leaving the state for work in other places. Sandeshkhali became the last big trigger for many.
BJP’s Booth-Level Strategy and Massive Victory
BJP worked silently for years. Booth by booth. They brought Modi and Shah for big rallies, but the real work was done by local boys. Suvendu’s switch gave them a face who speaks our language, knows our problems. This time turnout was massive – over 90%. People stood in long queues because they cared. When results came, BJP got around 207 seats, TMC down to 80 something. Vote share swung heavily. The Left is almost gone, Congress barely visible. It’s a new political map now.
Challenges Await the New Chief Minister
But listen, winning seats is easy compared to what comes next. Suvendu has a huge task in front of him. Our youth need jobs badly. Industries ran away in the last decade. Villages still need proper hospitals, schools, and electricity without cuts. Then there’s the social tension – different communities watching nervously. He’ll have to calm things while showing quick results. Businessmen are waiting to see if it becomes easier to invest here without daily headaches.
Mamata Banerjee Remains a Powerful Opposition Force
Mamata Banerjee is not someone who disappears. She still has strong emotional support among her core voters. She has already said she’ll fight from the streets. So the opposition will be loud and fierce. Inside BJP also, managing so many first-time MLAs with different ambitions won’t be simple.
Why This Moment Is Historic for Bengal
At 55, Suvendu is fit, experienced in tough fights, and knows how to connect with ordinary people. This is historic – first time a party like BJP has got full majority in Bengal. For the party it’s a huge victory in the east. For us Bengalis, it’s stepping into something new. Some of my friends are excited thinking of new factories, better safety for girls, more opportunities. Others are scared that the soul of Bengal – its inclusive, argumentative, artistic culture – might change.
The giantkiller has brought down the biggest giant of Bengal politics. Now the real test starts. The teacher in a village school in Malda, the small fish trader in Diamond Harbour, the autorickshaw driver in Siliguri – they don’t care about slogans. They want their daily life to become a little easier. Less fear, more chances for their children.
A New Chapter for West Bengal
Suvendu Adhikari is taking oath at an important turning point. Bengal has seen floods, famines, political storms, and still stood up. We are resilient people.
