Yesterday, on 12th April 2026, we lost Asha Bhosle. Our Asha tai. She was 92. Just like that, one of the most beautiful, alive voices in our lives fell silent forever.

That was Asha tai for millions of us. Her voice was not ever far away – whether it was on the radio, or blasting from the cassette player softly playing when needed comfort. She was born Ashalata in a small place called Sangli in Maharashtra, back in 1933. Her father sang, her elder sister Lata became the nightingale we all know, but Asha tai, made her own proven sky. Started singing as a tiny girl, faced struggles, sang in small shows, and slowly, steadily became the queen of playback.

What everyone loved most about her was she could sing anything and make it hers. That naughty, breathy “Piya Tu Ab To Aaja” – remember how it made our hearts race? Or the pure fire in “Dum Maaro Dum”? Then she would turn around and give us the heartbreaking softness of “Dil Cheez Kya Hai” like she had lived every bit of that pain herself. Over twelve thousand songs in more than twenty languages. Can you even imagine? From Hindi to Bengali, from Gujarati folk to English pop – she just poured her soul into every single one. Her chemistry with R.D.

Burman was something out of a fairytale. Pancham da brought out this bubbly, modern, fearless side of her. Songs like “Yeh Mera Dil”, “O Haseena Zulfon Wali”, “Chura Liya Hai Tumne” – we grew up dancing and romancing to them. They fell in love, got married, and even after he left, she carried their music like a treasure. She worked with everyone – from old masters like S.D. Burman to A.R. Rahman and beyond. Took Indian music to the world and still stayed so rooted, so one of us.

She won almost every award possible – Filmfare, National Awards, Padma Vibhushan, Dadasaheb Phalke – but she never let it change her. Always smiling that warm smile, always ready to embolden young singers, always saying she was still learning. Even in her late 70s she acted in a film called Mai and showed us she had acting chops too. That spirit unbeatable.

Life wasn’t always kind. First marriage, kids – Hemant, Anand, Varsha (we lost Varsha some years ago), ups and downs, but through it all, her voice remained steady and full of life. Yesterday she was taken to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai – exhaustion and a chest infection. This morning, her body just said enough. Her son Anand told us she’s no more. Last rites tomorrow at 4 pm at Shivaji Park.

Right now the whole country is crying with us. PM Modi, the President, Shreya, Sonu, so many singers and actors – everyone is sharing their favourite memories. Everyone’s saw an old video where she was laughing and teaching a young singer, and just broke down. She felt like family, didn’t she? Like that cool, talented aunty who always had the best stories and the best songs.

Asha Bhosle tribute candle light farewell

Tonight when alone, just put on one of her songs. Maybe “Mera Kuchh Saamaan”, or that happy “Jaane Kyun”, or the evergreen “Koi Sataaye”. Sing along even if cry. She sang for everyone’s of us – the happy, the sad, the lovers, the dreamers, the ones who were broken and the ones who were celebrating.
